You Won’t Believe Which Sport Has The Angriest Fans

You Won’t Believe Which Sport Has The Angriest Fans | Sports Takes & News |

Thanks to social media platforms, sports fans have a safe place to express their feelings in real time without smashing in their televisions or throwing any devices against a wall. One group, however, took a look at Twitter postings from fans and have declared the fans of one sport in particular are the angriest of all. Which sports provokes the most Twitter Rage, and which sports makes you smile and cry?

Using programs that scan Twitter for posting about specific topics, a Canadian website,, found that three out of every seven tweets about golf were angry tweets.

I find it astounding that 42% of golf fans online were ranked the angriest of an otherwise boring sport. In fact, no other sport among the 13 included had provoked a better than 30% “angry tweet” rate.  Only three other sports, the NFL (28%), MLB (26%), and soccer (21%) saw their fans post angry tweets more than one-fifth of the time.

Some interesting stats from this study caught my eye: Boxing fans seem to take humor in their sport and express with 37% of all tweets expressing it.

Basketball fans appear very balanced in their reactions, posting 38% love and sadness reactions to their sport, while also getting angry and finding humor in their sport 9% of the time.

Baseball fans are post positive and negative tweets about one quarter of the time.

Fans of Cricket, Ice Hockey, and Tennis post “love tweets” about their sports more than half time, while (not surprising) golf fans only show love for what they talk about on Twitter one-sixth of the time when reaching for their phones.

One sport, cycling, provided a strong reaction over 50% of the time, with 37% being “love tweets” and 27% being “sad tweets.” Reminding us that when you are passionate about something it will draw a response in today’s social media world. It also appears that fans outside the United States use Twitter to share all their feelings with Formula One, Rugby and Tennis all drawing over 50% positive social media posting.

Regardless of the sports you follow, social media platforms provide a way for fans to connect with each other and share the joys and pains of following their favorite teams and athletes. Why golf fans are so angry might be because they feel those playing for real money in pro tournaments may be bending the rules, which is why they probably have their phones in their hands in the first place, already one digit away from calling a network or a country club ready to squeal on someone.

Either way, if you know a golf fan, ask them if you can hold their phone during The Masters next month, because all this anger isn’t healthy, and with a green jacket on the line, Twitter Rage may reach a fever pitch and send someone to the hospital.
