NFL Draft Guru Mel Kiper, Jr. is already in full selection mode and is talking about the incoming class of quarterbacks. The troubling part of some of the players expected to be taken high in this year’s draft is it appears Kiper is unimpressed with some of them based on something he said this week.

Speaking on the “Breaking Big Blue” podcast, ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. had some interesting things to say about this year’s NFL Draft, especially the incoming class of quarterbacks. Kiper also mentioned one quarterback of particular interest to those listening to the podcast when he said:

“I think Daniel Jones is a better quarterback in this draft than everybody except Trevor Lawrence … Zach Wilson would be the closest to him and then Justin Fields. But I would say that Daniel Jones in this draft would be the second quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence. Coming out of Duke, he would have been the second highest-rated quarterback.”

New York, thanks to a fruitless mid-season winning streak, picks 11th in this year’s NFL Draft with the four incoming quarterbacks Kiper mentioned all expected to be gone by then. Kiper, however, did not blame the team’s less than great season on quarterback Daniel Jones, rather he defended the former Blue Devil when he said in the same interview:

“I don’t know what else he could have done … If you’re looking for a guy to be perfect without the offensive line, without Saquon Barkley, without receivers, without tight ends catching the ball on a consistent basis – dropping balls that would have sealed a game against Philadelphia – a critical drop in other games. I don’t know what else he could have done. They don’t want to be patient with players anymore. But the talk now is not realistic. The way we evaluate players, we’re kicking them to the curb after year one, year two, year three…We have to allow players to work through their growing pains and we don’t seem to like to do that.”

Mel Kiper, Jr. is nothing if he is not a salesman, since he has been convincing NFL teams as well as ESPN for years that what he says is football gospel while being right about as often as weatherman are about a snowstorm five days in advance.

So much of how well a player performs in the NFL is due to which team selects him, with their talent taking them to one level, and the system they play in providing opportunities for success or failure. Who’s to say that if Daniel Jones was taken by another team that he would not have had the same career to date as he has had with the Giants. The problem that so many franchises have is that they hype players taken high in the draft, just as New York did with Jones, setting fans up for disappointment when they can’t walk on water or lead teams to the Super Bowl after three years.

I am truly not sure if Kiper’s comments were a defense of Daniel Jones and what he thought of the Duke quarterback or an indictment of Justin Fields and Zach Wilson who are moving up, not down the draft boards of most NFL teams. Kiper might just be trying to show that he is the smartest person in the room again, or just trying to counterbalance the negative press around Jones’ 2020 season in New York.  Either way, with so many quarterbacks expected to be taken in the first round this year, any team drafting as high as the Giants would be foolish not to look at upgrading every position on their roster, including quarterback.

Mel Kiper, it appears, is telling New York to stay the course and keep Jones, something that may or may not happen. The great part is that what Kiper said, while interesting, will be forgotten in two months since it is completely irrelevant to the Giants and the 2020 NFL Draft since, just like a local weatherman, they will remind you when they are right and laugh off when they are wrong. That because this is the only job where the so-called experts can tell you how good they are while also telling you how much of a crap shoot the NFL Draft is, making it easier for them to get jobs so quickly despite being wrong so often.
