You Won’t Believe What Got NHL Games Delayed At Lake Tahoe | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
There’s nothing like a little sunshine to ruin a beautiful day outside, at least that’s how the National Hockey League feels after this weekend’s disaster that saw two games scheduled outdoors in Lake Tahoe delayed because, wait for it, the SUN! It would appear the NHL, after spending all their days inside hockey rinks, doesn’t know that even in wintertime, the sun shines during the day.

Social media was flooded with photos of the hockey rink set up for this weekend’s NHL Outdoors event with the rink set up on a golf course right on the edge of Lake Tahoe.
There were two differences between this year’s event and prior NHL Outdoor games. One, there were no fans to watch it, and without fans, there was no stadium or seats surrounding the ice. Two, without the seats to keep things cool, the sun, get this, melted the ice by the end of the first period of play.
The game Saturday night would be resumed hours later, around midnight for those on the East Coast, with Sunday’s game also moved back to later in the day to make sure the sun didn’t melt the ice again.

I know this was the first time the NHL outdoor event was delayed by weather, but by the Sun? Come on, who saw that coming right?!?!
I get it, without having the game in a football or baseball stadium the NHL exposed the ice to the potential of the sun in in the mountains near Lake Tahoe. Also, with the game being held in late February rather than New Year’s Day, the extra sun probably wasn’t factored into having it exposed outside without stadium shadows to protect it.
The fact that the NHL was even asked to play this game at noon local time (3:00 PM on the east coast) for the networks tells you all you need to know about the importance of this event, it doesn’t exist.
At best it should have been begun at or near sundown and allowed to be completed at night, instead, people who needed two seconds of brain power to figure out that the sun might become an issue never bothered to consider it, creating a television joke worthy of the NHL’s place in sports.
Even more than their winter counterparts from the NBA, the National Hockey League is purely a postseason sport, with games between teams on the far corners of the North American map unimportant during the regular season. Gimmicks like NHL Outdoor are needed to keep hockey on the sports map when so much else is going on, which means every little detail, such as planning for the sun during an outdoor day game, should be and must be planned out. When they are not, the NHL looks like a semi-pro league, and the sport becomes easier to take less seriously.
Nice job NHL, thanks for the picture postcards and the nighttime hockey by the lake … better luck next season in planning your event.
