Will Aaron Rodgers Be In Green Bay This Upcoming Season? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
There are two words hovering over one NFL team and their franchise quarterback. Those words are “trust” and “respect,” and for the Green Bay Packers, both seems to have left Lambeau Field in the heart and mind of Aaron Rodgers, who picked an interesting time to tell the team he wants out. The future Hall of Famer has mentioned the “R” word as an option before the start of the 2021 season. So, will Aaron Rodgers be in Green Bay this upcoming season or will Jordan Love become the Packers starting quarterback?
With the 2021 Draft now history, the drama that will be hanging over the NFL will clearly be in Green Bay, where the Packers are saying they will not trade quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and the future Hall of Famer saying that retirement before the start of the 2021 season is an option for him. With Rodgers already looking to the future and a life after the NFL, his need to deal with the nonsense that comes with the business side of sport is at an all-time low. That’s why not only was the quarterback willing to make his unhappiness known publicly, but do so during the draft, a time when his words would have the biggest impact.
It was interesting for me to learn that neither Bart Starr or Brett Favre reached their 17th season with the franchise, and Rodgers just completed his 16th season with the team in 2020. This drama was a year in the making after Green Bay drafted Jordan Love in the first round of the 2019 Draft, with Rodgers’ resentment coming to a head last week.
Just as we see with contract negotiations, “trust” and “respect” is a major issue in professional sports in the 21st century. With each side very loudly disrespecting the other in Green Bay, it is not impossible to think that someone other than Aaron Rodgers will be playing quarterback for the Packers this season.
In a move akin to “you can’t fire me, if I quit,” Rodgers knows his days are numbered in Green Bay and may just want to leave on his own terms rather than be shown the door when he doesn’t want to go. The result is a player who is lashing out at those around him in Green Bay, most of all those who control his fate and future with the team since the quarterback knows it is not a matter of if, but when he will be asked to leave Lambeau Field forever.
I always remember a scene from the Tom Cruise movie “Days of Thunder.” The scene is Cruise, who plays a NASCAR driver, being screamed at by his doctor, played by his then future and now ex-wife Nicole Kidman, who is explaining that control over one’s life is an illusion. Using a crash as her point of reference, the doctor explains to the driver that while we believe we have total control over our lives, we don’t which is why, just as a NASCAR driver can do everything right and still wind up in a wreck, someone can do everything right in their lives as still face bad results. Aaron Rodgers is the driver in this case. A person who believes they have done everything right and is being screwed over by the business of sports.
I firmly think that if training camps began this month, Rodgers would not be there, content with his career efforts and unwilling to do anything more for the Packers than he already has. Will that change come July? That remains to be seen, but if I was Jordan Love, I would make sure I knew the playbook, because his time on the practice field is going up this summer, and being behind center come week one a possibility.
