What Does Blake Griffin Bring To The Brooklyn Nets? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
On Friday, Blake Griffin woke up on the Detroit Pistons, yet by the end of weekend the soon to be 32-year-old was on the Brooklyn Nets. Now part of a championship contender, what will Blake Griffin bring to New York’s best basketball team, and will he help or hurt the team’s chances of reaching the NBA Finals?
Blake Griffin was more known for jumping over cars at the All-Star game than he was for doing much else other then dunking on the basketball court during his career; and shortly after signing a high-priced contract with the Clippers, the former Oklahoma Sooners forward was traded to the Detroit Pistons. Over the last two years, Griffin was injured, playing just 38 games over the last two seasons while posting less than 14 points per contest.
The experiment of having Griffin in Detroit ended last week when the Pistons brought out the rest of his five-year, $171 Million contract he signed in 2018. Now after not taking the court for three weeks, Griffin will join the Brooklyn Nets after the All-Star break.
Griffin doesn’t automatically become the Nets’ fourth option on the basketball court, and he doesn’t bring much postseason success to Brooklyn, having not played in at least ten postseason games in the same year since 2015. At best, Griffin is just another veteran presence on a win-now team who is likely to do almost anything, including trying to play some defense, in order to secure a trip to the NBA Finals and maybe even a championship ring.
This move may have been just as much about keeping Blake Griffin away from the Miami Heat, a team rumored to be in hot pursuit of his services in the trade market before his eventual release. Regardless of why he is part of the Brooklyn Nets now, the fact is that Griffin’s skillset has long been more about strength, something the NBA puts little value on in today’s finesse style of play. Griffin won’t enhance Brooklyn’s chances in the postseason, and is much closer to being a liability than an asset to the team under head coach Steve Nash, who may be hard pressed to find important minutes for the overhyped veteran.
To say that this move is much-to-do-about-nothing is an understatement, because with all their star power, if the Brooklyn Nets needed Blake Griffin to win the Eastern Conference, then I don’t want to hear about how good Kevin Durant, James Harden, or Kyrie Irving are. Let the NBA media have fun with this move, because for most fans in New York, this signing is drawing more yawns than cheers as the league gets ready to return for the second half of the regular season.
