Watch Mel Kiper Jr. say Patriots are ‘front and center’ for Justin Fields

Mel Kiper Jr. projects Ohio State football star Justin Fields will go to the New England Patriots.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. does not believe Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields will fall out of the top 10, but rather the New England Patriots will trade up to get him.

Kiper released his latest mock draft on Tuesday morning, projecting the Patriots will move up from No. 15 to 10 in a deal with the Dallas Cowboys to go get Fields. He is of the opinion Fields will be the fifth quarterback taken this spring after Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, BYU’s Zach Wilson, Alabama’s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance all going inside of the top six this year.

Recognizing the Patriots will be playing in the same AFC East that features Josh Allen, Tua Tagovailoa and now Wilson, Kiper believes the Patriots are in a great spot to potentially trade up to get their guy in Fields. Some view Fields as the No. 2 quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, including yours truly, but it is not about what you or I think, it is all about what the general managers think.

New England Patriots: Should they trade up to draft Justin Fields in the top 10?

The Patriots have to firmly understand that presumptive starter Cam Newton is a stop-gap quarterback at this point of his NFL career. New England can roll with him for a year or so more, but the Patriots are not winning the division with potentially the fourth-best quarterback in the AFC East going forward. This is why head coach Bill Belichick has to roll the dice on Fields in 2021.

Though not as pro-ready as Lawrence or Jones, Fields has starred at a major college football power in Ohio State the last two years. His skill set would fit in perfectly in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ scheme. While he is not going to fall to them at No. 15, Fields is absolutely worth trading up for, whether it is to 10th-overall with the Cowboys or as high as No. 4 to the Atlanta Falcons.

If Fields goes to the right organization, he has the potential to become the next star in this league.
