This Was The Best Super Bowl Halftime Show Ever | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
This weekend’s Super Bowl will feature a performance by The Weeknd, with many people already curious about where his time in front of the biggest television audience of the year will rank among the best ever. Well, according to a new, and flawed poll, what was one of the greatest 15 minute performances in music and sports history wasn’t even ranked among the top ten, leaving me to wonder who voted in it. That’s because there was one man, who for my money, offered up the best Super Bowl Halftime show EVER, period.
According to the Morning Consult, (a website that I have often used for my takes since discovering them last year) they decided to rank the ten Super Bowl performance of the last decade, which makes no sense for an event with such a rich history of stars during his long history. Nevertheless, perhaps because people can barely remember what happened ten minutes, let alone ten years ago, Bruno Mars took home the prize as the most popular halftime show from the people who voted. Mars, who was part of the show in 2014, was also joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Bruno Mars is also second on the list of most popular performances as part of his time with Coldplay during the halftime show in 2016. Third on the survey was last year’s halftime show in Miami featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, one that drew many complaints to the Federal Communications Commission since fans were “shocked” the Latina duo did what they did. The only performance of the last ten years not liked by half of those surveyed was that of Madonna, who took the stage in 2012 with CeeLo Green, LMFAO and Nicki Minaj.
While I wish the creators of this poll would have gone back more than ten years, I would like to now educate those of you on what was the best Super Bowl Halftime Show in history, and that was the one submitted by Prince. Yes, I am talking Mr. Purple Rain himself over the Gloved One Michael Jackson for one simple reason: It is much more difficult to perform while playing an instrument than it is to sing. And if you go back and look at what Prince did at the only Super Bowl ever to see rain in 2007, you will understand why what he did was magical in every way.
Yes, the performances of Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and U2 are all in the Hall of Fame of Super Bowl halftime shows, but to see Prince control himself with the passion of a performer and the calm of a cat burglar was all-time Amazing. As long as you are not too uptight, you’ll understand why he currently stands atop the mountain of halftime performers, with The Weeknd having a chance to add his name to the long list of those who have succeeded or flopped in front of the world’s greatest stage on Super Bowl Sunday.
