This Sports Figure Should Not Be The Next Host of ‘Jeopardy!’

This Sports Figure Should Not Be The Next Host of ‘Jeopardy!’| Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com

For the second time this year, fans of the popular trivia show “Jeopardy!” will be treated to someone from the sports world as a host. That’s because shortly after the two-week stint Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers did on the show, it was announced Joe Buck of Fox Sports will be a guest host this summer. As the show looks to find a full-time replacement for the legendary Alex Trebek, not only can I make a case that hiring Buck is a bad idea, but I will make the case that Joe Buck, himself, should turn the job down.

Alex Trebek was part of many evenings in American households as the host of “Jeopardy!” before passing away from cancer. Trebek’s way of dealing with contestants on the show was unmatched, allowing everyone on camera to feel comfortable while projecting a calm, humble image to those watching at home.

For me, watching Alex Trebek was like watching Johnny Carson since both knew the show was never about them, but those on the stage with them. Like Carson, who always let his guests shine in interviews, Trebek wanted to see the contestants do well, which is why for both people, a relaxed state of mind for their guests was part of their job.

When I watch Joe Buck, I get the feeling he is always trying to prove something to the audience. Perhaps that comes from being given opportunities because of his family name, since, as you may know, his father Jack Buck was the long-time St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster, and where Joe got his first big break. The younger Buck became a football announcer for Fox Sports, with the network also making him the main voice of their Major League Baseball coverage.

In short, Joe Buck IS the voice of Fox Sports, and that’s where his career should stay. As much as he may want this job, Joe Buck doesn’t need the job of hosting “Jeopardy!” This screams of vanity and wanting to try and prove he is more than what he already is, just like when Joe Buck tried to do a talk-show and failed.

This reminds me of another well-known sportscaster, Howard Cosell, who also tried his hand at hosting a talk show. The long-time voice of Monday Night Football also failed because he never understood this: talk shows are about the guests, not the host.

So too are game shows, which is why Joe Buck needs to say no.

Even putting aside the less than favorable feedback when Joe Buck was announced as the next guest host, there’s an old saying in sports that you never want to be the person who replaces a legend, but the person who replaces the person who tried to replace the legend. Joe Buck can’t walk in Alex Trebek’s shoes, and he will never win over the fans of “Jeopardy!” so why would he want the job, and why would those looking to fill the job want someone the fans don’t want?

Let’s face facts: No one will be able to replace Alex Trebek, even if they take over his old job. The producers of his show will be better off finding someone that few people have heard of and let that person grow into the host of “Jeopardy!” rather than trying to find someone with “star power” who also already has a reputation.

Joe Buck is not the kind of person a game show needs, and Joe Buck doesn’t need to continue to overexpose himself by taking on another project. There is zero upside to this for both the show and the candidate, so I hope the producers of “Jeopardy!” keep looking for their next host. And I beg them to stop looking at the marquee names, because there are plenty of diamonds in the rough just waiting to be discovered.
