Another domino in the NFL quarterback shuffle fell this weekend with the announcement that Drew Brees was retiring from the New Orleans Saints. The move, not a surprise to many, opens the door for potential free agent, Jameis Winston, to remain with the team and take over for Brees in 2021. While his biggest competition may come from one of his own teammates, Winston has the talent to move into the starting spot and replace the future Hall of Famer. However, with his hot and cold history, 2021 is likely a boom or bust year for Winston with the Saints.
In his final pass as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jameis Winston threw his 30th interception of the 2019 season, a pick-six that ended his last game with the team in overtime. With that pass the former Florida State Heisman Trophy winner became the first member of the 30/30 club with 30 TDs and INTs in the same season, a feat he added to by throwing for over 5,000 yards for a Buccaneers team that ended the year 7-9, and let Winston leave as a free agent.
Despite being slated to become a free agent later this month, Jameis Winston is considered the favorite to become the Saints starting quarterback this season now that Drew Brees has officially retired. Granted, the team still has Taysom Hill on the roster, long known to be a favorite project of head coach Sean Payton. However, Winston is by far the more talented quarterback, and if he re-signs with the team, he should be the started come week one this fall.
The position that Winston would put himself in is one that many quarterbacks would covet: He already knowns the system he is playing in, something many free agent quarterbacks can’t say when they sign with a new team, and he has the talent around him to help make his game better and pick up a double-digit winning season. In other words, the pressure will be on Jameis Winston in New Orleans.
The New Orleans Saints are a solid team and, truth be told, Jameis Winston brings with him more talent to the table than Drew Brees offered them last year since, if for no other reason, the 27-year-old still has a big arm and can get the ball down field, something the older veteran could not. Winston not only can win with the Saints, he MUST win with the Saints in 2021 simply because everything is lined up so perfectly for him. He’s joining a division winning team, all the core players are still in place, and he has the talent to elevate the team to a place they could not reach in 2020, the NFC Championship and even the Super Bowl, that’s how good he can be, and New Orleans should be this season.
It may not be fair, but it is the reality for Jameis Winston. It’s success or bust, because he will never be placed in a better position to win than he will be if/when he re-signs with the Saints.
