Brooklyn Nets Championship

The Big Three of the Brooklyn Nets may have only played a handful of games together, but one of its stars believes stopping them will be difficult come the NBA postseason. It was James Harden, the team’s newest addition, who predicted Brooklyn would be a tough out in any best-of-seven series against any team this spring as the trio still learns how to play with one another. Is “Harden right, and are the Brooklyn Nets poised to bring a NBA championship to New York City, or will Harden, his teammates, and fans of the team all be disappointed before a champion is crowned?

Speaking with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols last week, James Harden spoke about how good his new team in Brooklyn can be, saying, “We’re more than confident that it’s going to be difficult for a team to beat us four times in a best-of-seven series.”

Harden might be basing his opinion on the fact that he, Durant, and Irving were 5-1 after their 134-117 win against the Warriors on February 13th; or the fact that heading into that game the trio were averaging over 80 points as well as 20 rebounds and assists per game when they played together.

What Harden is overlooking, however, is how bad Brooklyn is on the defensive side, giving up 117.5 points per game. This is why the Nets are third in the Eastern Conference with a 15-12 record on Valentine’s Day.

Like so many great offensive NBA players, James Harden often overlooks the defensive aspects of the game since he feels like he will always make his next shot to make up for the one he just gave up. It has been this approach that has prevented Harden from winning an NBA title during his career, but is something Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving still have time to teach him this season.

So far things have been going well in Brooklyn since Harden was traded from Houston.  “The Beard” has been allowed to play point guard after Kyrie Irving deferred to him, taking the shooting guard role instead.  Still, as of now, the Nets are as close to the sixth seed in the East as they are the top spot, meaning that how the “Big Three” play the rest of the season could help set up a title run, or cause them to draw a postseason matchup that could crush their postseason dreams.

I, for one, am not buying the conversion of James Harden, because like all those other great scorers, they are unable to defer to their teammates when big games are on the line, and win or lose, they want the ball leaving their hands for the game winning shot, something Harden hasn’t had much success at in the postseason.

Perhaps, with the calming influence of Kevin Durant and the talent of Kyrie Irving on the court with him, 2021 will be different for Harden and for the Brooklyn Nets. For me, however, I won’t believe it until I see it, which honestly, I think is possible IF, and only if Harden accepts it is in his best interest to be the second or third best player on the team. I also want to see how this Nets team will pull itself out of a three-game losing streak if/when they have one; because if they don’t, that will be as much to the credit of Harden as anything else he does.

If Brooklyn’s head coach Steven Nash can get this team to play harder on defense, James Harden may be right and the Nets may be an unstoppable force in the postseason. Sadly, for Harden, he needs to prove he is ready to take that next step in his career, something that many won’t believe is possible until he and his teammates are lifting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
