This Is The Reason NFL Quarterbacks Are On The Move | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
It is being predicted by some that as many as half of the teams in the NFL will have new quarterbacks in 2021. What is not being discussed is why so much upheaval is about to take place this upcoming offseason. The reason behind the changes is two people, perhaps you have heard of them, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
Between the influx of new talent from college, as well as the potential trades and free agent signings, a dozen or more NFL teams may have a new starting quarterback next year; twice as high as the average number of head coaches that are replaced at the end of every season. The simple reason is that the NFL is a copycat league, with organizations stealing the blueprint on how to build their team from what they see in other teams each year. The result is that every franchise wants what every winning franchise has, which starts with a winning quarterback; and this year, the two players everyone is looking to find is Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes.
Tom Brady spent two decades with the New England Patriots. This past offseason he was signed as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and without OTAs, preseason games, and an entire new roster of players and coaches, Brady was able to take control of the NFC, and win three postseason road games, and reach Super Bowl LV. While some are not surprised by this feat, it does, in the mind of many, shows that the formulation of a system with the right players is a good formula for NFL success. And while true there’s only one Tom Brady, the principle is the same, finding the right quarterback to run the head coach’s system to perfection, is the formula to win a lot of games.
Patrick Mahomes was passed over by many NFL teams when he was drafted, with Kansas City making the bold move of trading up to the tenth overall pick to select him. Since his insertion into the starting lineup, Mahomes has been remarkable to say the least, and enters the Super Bowl as the third quarterback to win 25 of his last 26 starts in league history. Mahomes has the arm strength to get the ball down field, the ability to elude pass rushers to buy time or run for a first down, and with the occasional trick play, wreak havoc on opposing defenses week after week. In other words, if a team can’t have their own Tom Brady, they are looking for the next Patrick Mahomes, with some of this year’s incoming quarterbacks being compared to the Chiefs half-billion-dollar player.
Of course, it is unrealistic to look for the next Brady or Mahomes, but with each new star quarterback, the blueprint for what makes players successful at the position changes. Brady and Mahomes are two very different players, yet each has been great enough to guide their team to the Super Bowl, and winning in the NFL is the only true measure of success. While some might have said two years ago that NFL MVP Lamar Jackson is the future of the league, this offseason it is players like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes who are a better representation of what’s to come in the league since they are able to beat teams with their arm and legs. This while the so-called “pocket quarterbacks” like Tom Brady prove they have a place in the NFL.
Yes, there will likely be many changes this offseason as marquee names like Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson find new NFL homes, but just as both of this year’s starting Super Bowl quarterbacks proved, it is not always about the player’s skill set, it is about the system they are put into that helps determine who wins or loses each season. And this year, because of the success of Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, 30 other NFL teams are asking themselves, “Do we have the right quarterback on our team?” With the answer for half of them proving to be no.
