This Is The Reason John Lynch Needs Jimmy G To Succeed | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
As well-known members of the NFL media continue to offer up trade proposals for quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers’ general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that if healthy, Jimmy Garoppolo is their man for the 2021 season. Lynch, however, may not have any other options at this point after turning down one free agent who was reportedly interested in joining the team last season. Maybe you have heard of this quarterback, he played in a big game recently; and because of the 49ers willingness to stick with Jimmy G in 2020, the entire organization is now stuck with the often-injured quarterback until he succeeds or fails in spectacular fashion.
What comes to mind when thinking about Jimmy Garoppolo depends on if you are a believer or non-believer in the quarterback’s talents. Those who support him and think San Francisco would be foolish to give up on him bring up his 24-9 record since being traded by New England. Those who think the time has come to move the starting quarterback would bring up the fact he has been injured in two of the last three seasons, during which time the team was 7-19.
General manager John Lynch is behind Jimmy G being the team’s starting quarterback in 2021 “If Garoppolo stays injury-free,” but noted, “Being available is a big part of this thing, so, we — probably as a stated goal — we have to insulate ourselves better. We’ve got to have better options if he’s not there.”
Less than a year ago there was speculation that then free agent quarterback Tom Brady was interested in joining San Francisco since he’s from there and did root for the team as a boy. As it turned out, the interest was short-lived as the 49ers were hesitant to get rid of Jimmy Garoppolo to make room for Brady, and therefore passed on him.
Yet, knowing they were a few plays away from being Super Bowl winner last year, John Lynch still didn’t want Tom Brady, and stuck with Jimmy Garoppolo. That tells me that the fate of the recent Hall of Fame former player lies in the hands of the quarterback they traded for, with an entire franchise’s future resting in his hands.
So, as Peter King would propose that Deshaun Watson be traded to Minnesota, Kirk Cousins become a 49er, and Jimmy Garoppolo moves to Houston, let’s be clear about one thing: When any team turned down Tom Brady during the one offseason he was a free agent, then whomever you kept as your QB1 on your depth chart has fairly good job security.
It is only those around him that don’t have any job security if that quarterback falters, which means the loudest cheering you will hear for Jimmy Garoppolo in 2021 won’t be from the fans, but from wherever the 49ers GM is, because his success is now tied to the quarterback even more so than most.
No pressure Jimmy G, just the entire fate of a team is in your hands, and you only have to stay healthy and beat out Arizona, the LA Rams and the Seahawks to prove your worth.
