Steve Nash Picks Between Kyrie Irving And This NBA Legend | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
The Brooklyn Nets have an interesting trio of player now that they have traded for James Harden to play with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, and it’s the last of those three players who has head coach Steve Nash thinking about another colorful and talented NBA legend, Allen Iverson. And after what the Nets head coach said, you will be asking yourself if you would want Allen Iverson or Kyrie Irving on your team, with the answer Nash gave.
Steve Nash was asked if the talents that his point guard, Kyrie Irving, has compares well with Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. Nash replied by saying:
“I think Allen was special in his own right. I think Kyrie is more skilled. I think Allen was different. Allen was electrifying in a different way. He got to the line a lot. Allen was a crazy competitor. The variety of shot making coupled with the accuracy Kyrie has is historic. Allen is Allen. He’s one of the all-time greats. Kyrie, if you look at what he’s able to do on the court is historic too in the skill level and way he’s able to get his.”
When Steve Nash was in the midst of his Hall of Fame career he played against Allen Iverson. As a head coach, it is expected he would side with a player he will need to rely on to win games, explaining why he chose Irving or Iverson. With that said, the Brooklyn Nets have a track record over the last year and a half of protecting Irving by any means necessary, something Nash has already seen and been a part of. Knowing that, he gave the only answer he could to this question because doing otherwise would have created a firestorm the team could not handle.
While most will agree that Allen Iverson could be a pain in the ass for head coaches to deal with, his drive and talent were a force of nature on the basketball court. He fought and earned his way into the Hall of Fame, unlike Kyrie Irving, who will be carried by great players, such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant, if he makes it there at all. Unlike Irving, Iverson could always be counted on to play hard every game; Irving, however, is an unknown from day to day since his mental makeup has many people wondering if he loves basketball enough to continue his career.
One thing I know for certain: Allen Iverson could have played NBA basketball in any era, Kyrie Irving could not handle playing in the era Iverson did, which makes him the better player by far, period. With all due respect to Steve Nash, he is talking out of his coach’s ass and whistle if he thinks his current guard is anywhere close to Allen Iverson, but I give him credit for his effort.
