Should We Trust Anything Peyton Manning Says? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
It is always interesting to hear what former NFL players think about those who play the same position in the league now. One of those players who is not shy about offering up his opinion about quarterbacks is Peyton Manning, the newly minted Hall of Famer, who offered up his thoughts on one player who works for one of his former teams As someone who once heard him endorse a certain coaching candidate, I can tell you the QB Peyton Manning just endorsed should feel less like he was kissed by lady luck and more like he received the kiss of death.
Peyton Manning is one of those rare players who has admirers in two cities, having won a Super Bowl in both Indianapolis and Denver. It was his second team who Manning was asked about, specifically about the team’s quarterback, to which Manning said:
“I’m a Bronco fan, I’m a Drew Lock fan … I’m pulling for Drew. I’m excited for their prospects with a full year and an offseason. I’m excited for him to have a good year this year.”
Putting aside the fact that many people feel that the Denver Broncos are considered to be one of those teams looking to make a quarterback switch this offseason, the endorsement of Drew Lock by Peyton Manning comes with a grain of salt for many people. That’s because Manning, as you may remember, was someone who the New York Jets called before they hired Adam Gase to be their head coach two years ago … and how did that work out (Spoiler Alert: Gase was fired on the last day of the season in January!)
It seems to me that Peyton Manning, for better or worse, is unable to say anything bad about anyone he likes or has some type of tie to. This is most likely the reason Manning knows he would be unable to take a broadcasting job because the thought of saying anything negative goes against his personality; but also makes him a terrible choice when it comes to asking for a recommendation on hiring a coach, or discussing a player. In short, if Peyton likes you, he is your go-to person for a reference, even if you are unqualified to hold the job you are trying to get.
If I was a Denver Broncos fan, I would be calling up the ticket office and warning them that if a quarterback change is not made this offseason, there will be a new person in their seat next season. The Broncos can’t take what Peyton Manning says seriously because he might be a fan of Drew Lock the same way he was of Adam Gase, but his suggestion isn’t enough for me to keep any player or coach on my roster. In fact, after burning the New York Jets, Drew Lock might as well put his home up for sale or cancel his apartment lease, because he has just received the NFL’s version of the Kiss of Death, and his time in Denver is now limited since he has likely played his final game in the Broncos’ uniform. This is all thanks to the endorsement of Peyton Manning.
