Should The USA Boycott The Winter Olympics? | Sports Takes & News |

As athletes from around the world continue to prepare for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games this summer, others are preparing for next year’s Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China. There is, however, a movement underway to convince President Biden to boycott the games next year to protest their human rights violations. So, should the Unites States boycott the Winter Olympics next year?

On February 3rd, a year and day before the start of the 2020 Winter Olympic Games and just weeks into his new job as president, Biden, though a White House spokesperson said the United States was not considering a boycott of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. By the end of the month, however, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “There hasn’t been a final decision made on that, and of course we would look for guidance from the U.S. Olympic Committee.”

Jon Mason, a spokesperson for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee told CNBC last week that the committee opposes a boycott of the games, “because they have been shown to negatively impact athletes while not effectively addressing global issues.”

On the other side of the debate is Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United States Ambassador proclaiming that China, “is more obviously dangerous today than Nazi Germany was in 1936,” adding that the United States would have boycotted the Winter and Summer Olympic Games the country hosted that year if they had, “known what Nazi Germany would become.”

Sports have always been a starting point for which changes are born such as when Jackie Robinson made his Major League Baseball debut in April 1947, eight and a half years before Rosa Parks was arrested for riding in the front (white) section of a bus.

Do I think the Chinese government will change their ways after allowing thousands of Olympians into their country? No, of course not, but perhaps with the words spoken by a few visitors to their athletes, some inside their country will have a different view of the world and know that their country needs to change from within.

Provided that all American and international athletes are kept safe during their stay, then I don’t believe a boycott of the Beijing games would help, but rather only hurt the games.

Knowledge is always a good thing when it is unfiltered by politics, something the past years should have taught many Americans. So, by giving citizens a first-hand knowledge of people from around the world, they will understand we have more in common with them than they realized; as a result, the fear that some have for outsiders may diminish, opening the door to a better understanding on both sides.

The first step is often the most difficult in any journey, and allowing our Olympic athletes to make that trip to China next year may be that first step needed to bridge the gap between them and the rest of the world.  Forcing out athletes to stay home doesn’t help anyone, nor will it change anything. That’s why they should go, and President Biden should not boycott the Winter Olympic Games in China next year.
