Should Patrick Ewing Be Mad Over Being Stopped In MSG?

Should Patrick Ewing Be Mad Over Being Stopped In MSG? | Sports Takes & News |

On the first anniversary of the global pandemic being declared, NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing was upset because he was asked to display his credentials at Madison Square Garden, the same place he entertained fans as a member of the New York Knicks. What Mr. Ewing doesn’t understand is that his is not HIS Garden anymore, and the world is a different place now.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I can tell you that the last year has been the most unique time for the city in my lifetime. While some Covid-19 rules are slowly being lifted, many of the things that New Yorkers took for granted are different or have disappeared forever. One of those things is the freedom to move in and out or around places that were once as easy to access as a subway station. Madison Square Garden is one of those places where, without the proper security, could become a dangerous place for those visiting, such as for the teams playing in this year’s Big East Tournament.

Yes, Patrick Ewing is a basketball legend in New York, and despite never winning a title for the Knicks, is still a VIP among many of the city’s basketball fans. This is 2021, however, and we are one year into a pandemic that has forced governments to put in place rules to protect us from ourselves, and the spread of a virus. Mr. Ewing, however, was offended that some 20-something year old security guards were making him display his credentials in order to move around MSG as he arrived for his team’s game against Villanova, saying, “I thought this was my building. And I feel terrible that I’m getting stopped, accosted, asking for passes. Everybody in this building should know who the hell I am. I’m getting stopped. I can’t move around this building. I was like, ‘What the hell? Is this Madison Square Garden?’ I’m gonna have to call Mr. Dolan and say, ‘Jeez, is my number in the rafters or what?”

The fact of the matter is that there are probably not too many people working in MSG that were there when Patrick Ewing played. The Mr. Dolan that Ewing is referring to is James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks and Madison Square Garden, and a person who gets rid of staff members at the drop of a hat, so for Ewing to “big time” people half his age while all they are doing is their job, to me, is more of a reflection on him than them. His sense of entitlement needs to be left at the door. because he isn’t above following the rules set forth by New York City or those who are running the Big East Tournament as MSG this year.

And for those of you who may think this is about race and that Ewing is being singled out because he is a black head coach, think again … everyone is being asked to display their passes, that’s why everyone is given lanyards to wear them, it’s 2021 and security is important again. However, if it makes Ewing feel any better, he and Dolan spoke on Thursday; however, I trust that the Hall of Famer will still need to have his passes in his possession for Georgetown’s game on Friday.

The lesson here is that if you are expecting special treatment, you are going to be disappointed more often than not. Don’t be mad at the people (like security guards) doing their jobs, be upset with the people like Patrick Ewing who have such a high level of entitlement that they can’t help those people do their jobs, and instead call them out for doing it. Sorry Patrick, but this isn’t YOUR Garden anymore.
