Rangers-Lightning Game 5 ends in an all-out brawl

The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers engaged in a brawl at the end of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

The New York Rangers took the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals, but the Tampa Bay Lightning evened things up by winning Games 3 and 4. Now, the series headed back to Madison Square Garden, where the Rangers won their previous eight games at their home venue.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the magic ran out, as the Lightning bounced back from a 1-0 deficit to win 3-1 and to take a pivotal 3-2 series lead. But once the clock struck triple zeroes, the two teams engaged in a brawl after Tampa Bay winger Nikita Kucherov shot the puck at New York defenseman Adam Fox.

The brawl was higlighted by a one-on-one fight between fellow former first-overall picks Steven Stamkos and Alexis Lafrieniere.

New York scored first, as defenseman Ryan Lindgren put the puck in the back of the net on an impossible angle shot in the second period. The lead would not last long after Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev scored with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

The game remained tied until 1:50 remained in regulation, when Ondrej Palat scored to give the Lightning the late 2-1 lead. Palat played hero once again, as he scored the winning goal in Game 3 with less than a minute remaining.

Forward Brandon Hagel scored the empty-net goal to secure Tampa Bay’s 3-1 win.

The Lightning are now one more win away from clinching a spot in the Stanley Cup Final for the third-consecutive year. Game 6 takes place on Saturday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
