Pros react to Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad eye poke

Reactions to an eye poke ending Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad at UFC Vegas 21.

For Leon Edwards, it was his first fight in just under two years and a chance to prove he was still one of the elite welterweight top contenders. For Belal Muhammad, it was a chance to pull off a major upset and make himself a bigger name and get such top contenders’ bout.

But it all was for naught. An accidental eye poke in the second round brought the fight, which served as the UFC Vegas 21 main event, to a no-decision.

This fight marked Edwards’ first fight since mid-2019. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented an early 2020 matchup with Tyron Woodley from happening, and Edwards was originally booked to face Khamzat Chimaev, a bout that has been scrapped three times due to both men, particularly Chimaev, having positive tests.

Edwards entered this fight on an eight-fight win streak, which included wins over Vicente Luque, Bryan Barbarena, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson and Rafael dos Anjos.

Muhammad entered this fight off four straight victories and eight wins in his last nine bouts. This was a quick turnaround for Muhammad, who fought just last month at UFC 258 in a victorious outing over Dhiego Lima via unanimous decision.

UFC Vegas 21: Brutal eye poke ends Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad as a no-decision

Edwards looked great in the opening frame, using Muhammad’s own key to victory against him in pushing the pace and controlling the action. After an eye poke already occurred earlier in the fight, however, Edwards accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye again in the second.

Muhammad, who was already bleeding after a head kick, was in concerning pain, with his eye reddened and bloodied. The fight was called off with no winner.
