See what other fighters thought of the one-sided, bizarre UFC Vegas 22 main event
While Kevin Holland had a lot of momentum heading into this fight with his highlight finishes and talk, Derek Brunson put all that to a halt thanks to his unanimous decision win in the UFC Vegas 22 main event.
As of late, Brunson had been trying to shake off the claims that he is a middleweight “gatekeeper.” Brunson, who has been a UFC veteran for just under a decade now after coming to the promotion from Strikeforce, came into this bout on a three-fight win streak. He took decisions over Elias Theodorou and Ian Heinisch before scoring a finish of the then-unbeaten Edmen Shahbazyan.
Holland came into this contest off a breakthrough 2020, where he became the second UFC fighter to five wins in a calendar year and earned FanSided MMA’s 2020 Fighter of the Year award. Holland’s year saw him score victories over Anthony Hernandez, Joaquin Buckley, Darren Stewart, Charlie Ontiveros and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Four of those wins came by a finish, three of them in the first round and three of them with performance bonuses.
Pros react to Kevin Holland talking his way into a loss to Derek Brunson
From the opening frame on, Brunson’s focus was his takedowns and grappling — and Holland seemed to not have an answer for it, not care to have an answer or both. Holland showed little to no resistance as he did a lot of talking and a lot less fighting in the bout.
Holland did rock Brunson in the second round, but Brunson was able to survive it and find an answer. Holland even scored a takedown in the fifth, becoming the first UFC fighter to take Brunson down, but that was all of his “highlights” as Brunson won nearly every round on the judges’ scorecards.
