Police Say Fatal Shooting of Daunte Wright in Minneapolis Suburb Was Accidental

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn.—A 20-year-old Black man died after a police officer shot him during a traffic stop Sunday. On Monday, the police chief said that it was an accident and that the officer mistook her gun for a Taser.

The man who died was later identified by officials as Daunte Wright. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the officer as Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center police department.

Tim Gannon, Brooklyn Center police chief, at a press conference on Monday showed body-camera video that showed police approaching Mr. Wright’s car. Mr. Wright exits the car and then gets back in, as police try to pull him back out. Ms. Potter can be seen pointing a gun at Mr. Wright and saying repeatedly that she is going to use her Taser. The car then speeds away and the officer can be heard saying, “Holy shit, I just shot him.”

Efforts to reach Ms. Potter were unsuccessful Monday evening and a union official declined to comment.

Based on the video footage, it was roughly 30 seconds from the moment that Mr. Wright exited the car until the moment he was shot.
