This is a very strange time.
I suppose for many of us who choose not to dwell on the negative, we have looked back at 2020 and captured as many lessons we can apply to 2021 and beyond.
We are ready to move on to the next chapter of our lives but unlike years past, 2021 is starting out to be much more difficult.
Millions of Americans are truly concerned about the future of our nation. The multi-pronged assault on patriotism is mind blowing.
Just to be clear, the definition of PATRIOTISM is devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.
While there is no mention of politics, politicians or political parties… only one’s country… there can be no doubt patriotism is under fire like never before.
Even more interesting to me is the level of ignorance on display in the media and on social sites with respect to our history, founding, the US Constitution, rule of law and American Exceptionalism.
Obviously, Americans have debated political ideas for centuries, but we are in a place where debate has largely been replaced in many forums with visceral hatred which is simply unacceptable.
So for those of us who are predisposed to attempt to make things better, where do we go from here?
For me, I decided to start by reflecting on three powerful 2021 anniversaries and examine how they have directly impacted my view on PATRIOTISM.
Bringing our company PATRIOT MISSION to life with Greg Land.
Watching America’s homeland under attack on September 11th, 2001.
Flying F15s in Desert Storm, an American led coalition to defeat Iraqi tyranny.
What experiences have shaped your perspective on PATRIOTISM?
Throughout the year, I’ll share my thoughts related to PATRIOTISM and invite you to share some of yours. My sense is we can use this discussion as a catalyst toward real grassroots solutions.
Regardless of the current political climate, I personally believe there are tens of millions of Americans who want to see our fellow citizens re-united around core principles upon which the nation was founded.
There is no doubt the politicians we have hired on both sides of the aisle to represent us have to be held to account for their performance.
I also believe we have lost our proverbial minds if we expect politicians to be the ones to lead Americans to rediscover our goodness and bring us together.
Politicians are hired to serve the citizenry… or at least that’s how the founders set it up. It seems to me, if there was ever a time to connect with each other and find common ground, this is it.
There is a lot of pontificating about UNITY from the paid political class, but it will require a focused effort from citizens beyond anything we’ve ever done to effect real change that will truly make a difference.
The strategy we shared toward the end of last year to put PATRIOTISM ABOVE POLITICS™ will be key to uniting our citizens.
There will be more to share about that in the coming weeks, but first it’s important to focus on our personal perspectives and formative experiences.
Whether you have been with us since January 2011 or are a recent reader, we appreciate your interest and fellowship.
Here’s to an amazing 2021… no matter what the politicians say!
