New Oregon coach Dan Lanning has epic head coaching experience

The Oregon football program is getting a new head coach with some rather unique coaching experience. Turns out this isn’t Dan Lanning’s first head coaching gig.

When Dan Lanning took gig as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks, one concern some had about him was his general lack of head coaching experience.

Lanning is a talented coordinator who has been a key member of orchestrating and designing one of the best defenses college football has seen in some time, but the Oregon football job is a pretty prestigious head coaching opportunity.

Having someone without any previous head coaching experience take over?

Well, that’s going to be something that’ll be a point of concern for some Oregon football fans. Rest assured, Duck fans, Lanning isn’t actually a first time head coach. Well, at least not technically. He’s got some rather unique head coaching experience that many others may not.

Apparently, he’s got some pretty valuable head coaching experience. According to Lanning, he once led a “damn good” third grade basketball team.

Oregon football: New Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has unique previous head coaching experience

Lanning is taking over at Oregon after Mario Cristobal left in controversial fashion so that he could lead the Miami Hurricanes. While this is Lanning’s actual first head coaching job, he has gained a good bit of experience over the past few years.

Lanning coached at the high school level from 2008 to 2010. He ended up as a graduate assistant at Pitt, then made his way to Arizona State, and then later Sam Houston State. In 2015, Lanning was a member of Nick Saban’s staff, a graduate assistant for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Following a stop at Memphis, Lanning made his way to Georgia and now he’s set to lead the Ducks.
