Most Disappointing QB Signing: Bears, Texans Or Washington? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
The quarterback carousel has been spinning quickly this week as NFL teams have been quick to sign backups or look to find that one-year wonder who can give them a chance to reach the playoffs. Three teams to make interesting quarterback signings are Chicago, Houston and Washington, with each finding a potential starter who may or may not play in 2021. However, like most signings, each quarterback has been compared to each other in the discussion of which team had the most disappointing QB signing.
We begin in our nation’s capital where Alex Smith was let go, and Washington followed up by signing Ryan Fitzpatrick, a quarterback who reportedly told teams he wanted a chance to start in 2021. In his arrival in the NFC East, Fitzpatrick will have a chance to show off his “Fitzmagic” skills in what was the weakest division in the football last year.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, however, is set up to be in the same position he was in last year with Miami, poised to be the backup to a rookie quarterback if Washington drafts one next month, or be the opening week starter until head coach Ron Rivera is ordered to or feels like their rookie is ready to take the reins. It’s not the worst signing in the world for Washington, and it likely tells the New York Jets that Sam Darnold is not a hot commodity.
Heading South we stop in Houston where the Deshaun Watson drama continues, yet the Texans signed another quarterback in Tyrod Taylor, who before backing up Justin Herbert last year with the Chargers, was a starter in Buffalo.
Taylor was done in by a doctor’s needle last season, clearing the way for Herbert to become the team’s permanent starter. However, he now enters a situation in Houston where he may backup Watson or take over if Watson gets his wish and is traded this offseason. Honestly, it would have been difficult for Houston to lure many QBs to their team with the drama of Watson still hanging over the franchise, so for Taylor, it is a chance to be on a team that has some uncertainty at the position.
When I think of Chicago sports, I think of Michael Wilbon of ESPN, who said this of his team’s quarterback signing:
“I’m angry about the Bears signing Andy Dalton. This guy Ryan Pace should be fired if this is all he can do. He and Matt Nagy have led the Chicago Bears to ruin.”
His words are probably shared by many Bears fan who heard that Russell Wilson wanted to leave Seattle and play in Chicago this season; however, when it became clear that the Seahawks were not putting their quarterback on the trade market, Andy Dalton was signed as a free agent to compete with Nick Foles for the starting QB job. On the disappointment scale, it is easy to put the Bears at a ten, however, this is not the worst signing in NFL history; but having come after being in the hunt for Russell Wilson, this would understandably make fans in Chicago less than excited.
Overall, expect Washington to defend their NFC East title with Fitzpatrick providing some drama both good and bad. While in Houston I don’t think Taylor will start by choice of the team or the head coach since Watson is going to be there for a while even if he doesn’t want to be. And in Chicago, the dye has already been cast and the Bears weren’t expected to do much in 2021 anyway, so any success Andy Dalton has will probably lead to a nice payday this time next year.
However, if you are in the Wilbon camp, then you need Andy Dalton to crash and burn to clear out the front office, putting fans of the Chicago Bears in the worst possible spot, needing to root for your team to take a huge step back in order to regroup. That’s why Andy Dalton is most disappointing QB signing.
