Mike Tannenbaum Has Amazing Advice For The New York Jets

Many in the NFL media believes the 2021 NFL Draft begins with the second overall pick. After all, Trevor Lawrence is almost a lock to be the first player taken by the Jackson Jaguars, thus leaving the New York Jets with the first real decision to make on draft night. Mike Tannenbaum, a former general manager of the New York Jets, was recently asked what he would do if he was once again working for his old team, and he made it very clear which direction he would take the Jets this year.

Speaking with the New York Daily News, Mike Tannenbaum did not hesitate when speaking about the New York Jets or what he feels the team needs to do at quarterback. “I think Sam’s a good player,” he told the tabloid, “I don’t think he’s a great player.”

For Tannenbaum the choice is easy with the second pick in this year’s draft:

“Zach Wilson has the highest upside. He is a guy that in my opinion is really special. He can make throws on the run, has athleticism and accuracy … Zach Wilson has a higher ceiling. If I was the Jets, I would make that decision pretty quickly … I would trade Sam (Darnold) and get the best possible package.”

There are many mock drafts connecting the New York Jets and BYU quarterback Zach Wilson; and with the second pick in the draft, a choice must be made between Wilson, Justin Fields, Mac Jones and Trey Lance. Also, with a new head coach working for the team, the timing seems right for the Jets to make a change at quarterback. With other teams seemingly interested in Sam Darnold, the time would also be right to make a move, acquire some additional talent in draft picks or players, and turn the team over to a new signal caller.

The New York Jets, once again, are at a crossroads; and while keeping or trade Sam Darnold could be justified, most second year general managers and first year head coaches are going to want their own players on the team. That means bye-bye to Darnold, who was not taken by the current GM and hello to a quarterback who many believe is just as talented as anyone in this year’s draft if not more so.

When you add in the Jets recent history of hiring key people for three to four years before letting them go and starting over again, the sense of urgency goes up in the front office and in the head coach’s office to get this decision right. And with many arrows pointing to Zach Wilson over Sam Darnold, it appears to me that the New York Jets are slow playing their hand waiting for that one team to shoot for a quarterback in the draft and miss. Which would open up the chance for the Jets to offer up their quarterback to make room for their future.

Sam Darnold got a raw deal in New York, the Jets provided him with a horrible head coach, a dreadful offensive line, and few viable weapons to work with. Fans of Gang Green do not blame Darnold for what went wrong during his time here, that honor belongs to Adam Gase. However, they do understand that the quarterback probably needs a fresh start, as does the organization.

Since the Jets already have a second year GM in Joe Douglas and first year head coach in Robert Saleh, having a new quarterback makes the most sense. It truly feels like Zach Wilson should and will be on the New York Jets this year, and that is what is best for the team in 2021; from there it will be up to the organization to figure out how to build around him, just like how every other rebuilding this team has gone about it, but only this time with a potential franchise quarterback already in place.
