Michigan losing Xavier Worthy could be a big win for Alabama

Xavier Worthy, one of the top signees of Michigan football’s 2021 recruiting class is leaving the program and re-opening his recruitment.

The Michigan football program is losing one of the top signees from last year’s recruiting class. Xavier Worthy, a four-star recruit who signed his Letter of Intent last December, has submitted a NLI release request.

Worthy was the nation’s No. 61 overall recruit, No. 8 receiver and the No. 4 recruit out of California where he starred for Central East High School in Fresno, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound receiver was the third-best recruit signed in the 2021 class behind five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy and four-star running back Donovan Edwards.

Worthy tweeted about the NL release request but didn’t specify the reasons for this change in his college football future.

Xavier Worthy leaving Michigan and reopening his recruitment

Worthy was expected to garner playing time as a true freshman because of his home run ability and return skills. Worthy ran a 10.55 in the 100 meters in high school and was compared to DeSean Jackson for his ability to stretch the field and take the top off a defense.

Now, he’ll be looking for a new home and Michigan will be looking for other underclassmen to step into a role he potentially could have filled.

Worthy had offers from the top programs across the nation with Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Penn State, Auburn and USC among the more than 20 offers he received. The Crimson Tide were believed to be the runner-up to the Wolverines so Michigan’s loss could be Alabama’s gain.

However, It remains to be seen if any of those schools have scholarships available for Worthy for him to join their team this fall. He could always walk-on this fall before earning a scholarship in 2022 if he decided to go that route.
