Live Music Lineup: Black Legacy Project, Jonatha Brooke and Helmet perform in Portland

It was formed in 2021 by Todd Mark and Trey Carlisle, and its debut album “Black Legacy Project Vol. 1” was released last week. The band brings together communities from all over, including Los Angeles, Denver and the Mississippi Delta, to record essential songs of the Black American experience like “Rise Up” and “What Color is the Soul of a Man.” Grab tickets for the trailblazing band and hear the new album live.

One Longfellow Square, 181 State St., Portland, $35 in advance, $40 day of show. onelongfellowsquare.comDating back to her early days as a member of the duo The Story in the late ’80s, singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke has been a steadfast presence with first-rate songwriting and heart-holding vocals. For her show in Portland, Brooke will be accompanied by Sean Driscoll on guitar, and they’ll include a few tunes from her upcoming musical “Switched,” along with fan favorites like “So Much Mine” and “Linger.” If you can’t make the Portland show, Brooke has a pair of shows at The Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth on Sunday.

Helmet8 p.m. Saturday. Aura, 121 Center St., Portland, $29.50, 18-plus. auramaine.comAlternative metal/punk/prog rock band Helmet, formed in 1989 by Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar), is set to release its ninth studio album, “Left,” in November. Singles “Gun Fluf” and “Holiday” can be heard now. You’ll get a taste of other new ones, along with heavy-hitters from across their career, when they hit the stage in Portland. The rest of the band is Kyle Stevenson (drums), Dan Beeman (guitar) and Dave Case (bass).
