UFC welterweight Kevin Lee feels relieved to take a step back away from the spotlight ahead of his return against Daniel Rodriguez.
Kevin Lee makes his long-awaited return to the UFC octagon against up-and-coming prospect Daniel Rodriguez, in just his second welterweight bout in the promotion after a long tenure at lightweight.
Lee is looking forward to a new journey at welterweight after an up-and-down run at lightweight. He was once thought of as potentially a future UFC lightweight champion in his rise through the promotion.
Lee faces short-notice replacement Rodriguez after he was originally scheduled to face rising contender Sean Brady earlier this year. He is looking to snap a recent losing skid, falling short in three of his last four bouts including his welterweight debut against Rafael dos Anjos.
During his UFC Vegas 35 pre-fight press conference, Lee gave some insight into how he appreciates the opportunity to take a break away from the spotlight.
“I was able to shy away from all of the media. Just being able to step back and focus on what I needed to, to me, I’m making history,” Lee said. “I’m looking to come back from two knee surgeries within a year. That took a lot of time and focus to put together a championship run.”
“Now, I’m able to walk back into the spotlight, and when I get there I’ll be prepared.”
Kevin Lee returns to the UFC octagon after more than a year away from the sport
Lee quickly rose to prominence after winning nine out of ten bouts ahead of his interim lightweight title matchup with Tony Ferguson at UFC 216. He would go on to fall short in a submission loss.
Now, Lee can focus less on cutting a good chunk of weight, and more on the fight itself. Training with famous MMA coach Firas Zahabi has surely created a new version of Lee, which he expects to showcase at UFC Vegas 35.
