Kelvin Gastelum snaps losing streak against Ian Heinisch

UFC 258  Kelvin Gastelum defeated Ian Heinisch.

Kelvin Gastelum defeated Ian Heinisch via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28), at UFC 258 on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2020, live from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV.

“Coming off of back-to-back-to-back losses, that’s not easy, to get up and back here again and again after failing a few times, it’s not easy to get motivated again. Anybody that’s going through stuff, failures, setbacks in their lives, you guys can do it. If you get your mind right, get your body right,” said Gastelum.

The first round was a wrestling battle. Heinisch opened the round going for a takedown but it was Gastelum who controlled most of the round. Gastelum outwrestled Heinisch and dictated the action in the first round. By the middle of the second round, Gastelum had already recorded a personal best four takedowns. The second round was spent on the feet more than the previous round. The two traded strikes. However, whenever Heinisch landed a good shot, Gastelum would wrap Heinisch and slow his momentum. The final round continued the trends of the previous two rounds. Heinisch came forward and attacked but Gastelum was able to use his wrestling to limit the damage. Heinisch went for a flying knee that just missed a clean connection. However, Gastelum was able to catch Heinisch and Gastelum dumped him to the ground. Heinisch was extremely aggressive, taking down Gastelum but was unable to get the finish he needed after losing the first two rounds.

Gastelum entered UFC 258 as the ninth-ranked middleweight but he was in desperate need of a victory. Gastelum had lost his three previous fights and had not won since May 12, 2018. The victory improved Gastelum to 16-6. In his post-fight interview, Gastelum said he would be interested in fighting either Paulo Costa or Robert Whittaker, should either fighter be forced to withdraw from their scheduled April 17 fight.
