Pros react to Petr Yan losing bantamweight title to Aljamain Sterling on a DQ

Everything I worked for to this point and to have the fight go like that… I thought the fight was very close, I thought I was down two rounds. That’s not the way I wanted to win. That’s not the way I envisioned this. I just took the belt off. I was trying to continue even being like that, I was in a bad shape and it would just have been ego taking over and just to get further punishment. The ref told me I was down. I don’t know. I understand that there is some heat, some bad blood a little bit, but it’s all rivalry…

Islam Makhachev vs. Drew Dober

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Islam Makhachev defeated Drew Dober via submission (arm-triangle choke), Round 3 – 1:37

Islam Makhachev dominates and finishes Drew Dober

The finish is always very important. Maybe Dana will give me the bonus… I tried to finish him in the first round, but Dober is a very strong guy. He has like crazy power, that’s why I just tried to make him tired, make him work and finish him in the third round.

Highlights:

Thiago Santos  vs. Aleksandar Rakić

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Aleksandar Rakic def. Thiago Santos via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Aleksandar Rakic bests Thiago Santos in disappointing PPV opener

The game plan against Thiago was to keep the distance, to punch from outside, punch from the distance, but here in the APEX, the cage is a little bit smaller, so it’s harder to keep the distance. Closing the distance is very, very fast. We know Thiago is dangerous in the short distance with his punches, with his wild punches. He has like hammers in both hands, so I needed to be aware of this. I kept it simple. I picked him apart and won all three rounds by domination.

Dominick Cruz vs. Casey Kenney

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Dominick Cruz defeated Casey Kenney via split decision

Dominick Cruz shows he is still a contender with win over Casey Kenney

I love my hometown, that’s my heart: Tucson, Arizona. I say I’m from San Diego because I’m Tucson-built, San Diego-made. I really did move from Tucson because early on in my career they did not want to really give me the love and the support. I don’t even know if they gave poor Casey Kenney the love and the support, I don’t know what they are doing. Jump on board with these guys. He is a savage and I’m here to support Tucson too. My whole family lives there. My mom, my dad… My whole family. I go back home all the time. All my people in Tucson, I love you. All my people in San Diego, thank you for the support too. It’s good to be here and it was good to scrap with ol’ Tucson boy.

Song Yadong vs. Kyler Phillips

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Kyler Phillips defeated Song Yadong via unanimous decision (29-28 X3)

I was super impressed by the fight. I wasn’t like super impressed by myself, but I was happy and grateful for the opportunity and also grateful for the firefight that I had. I haven’t had too many fights like that. Usually if I land a right kick to somebody’s head, they are going down, so when I hit him with that and he was still there, wobbling, I was like “I’m in for a real fight”. It woke me up and I kind of felt like I had a surreal experience. I hit him there with my best shot and I was like “Damn, it just got real”. I’m in the UFC Top 15 now, this is where I’m at. It’s not going to be that easy. It kind of woke up something inside of me, especially in him too. He hit me with some of his power shots and it didn’t faze me. I think that type of fight was just exactly what both of us needed to see who we truly are as fighters and has showed a good grasp of knowledge of different styles, being able to mix it up plus the heart and endurance that I had to use to win.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Askar Askarov

Askar Askarov mauls Joseph Benavidez in one-sided beatdown

I still have some mistakes in my game I have to work on harder. I’m going to improve my game and I think I’m ready for the title. This is the message I want to send to Dana White: Dana, all the guys I’ve fought in the UFC have been Top 1, Top 2, Top 3… I’ve fought all the top-ranked guys and I beat them. I’m here. I’m ready for this title. It doesn’t matter who has it, I want to fight for it.

This is the feeling all fighters chase. It’s the best feeling in the world. Finally, it’s been so long. I got a taste of The Ultimate Fighter where I got a highlight-reel knockout in 30 seconds and it’s taken now seven fights in the UFC to finally get another finish. I’m glad I could showcase all my skillset on the ground and weathering storms off my back taken, turning around and finishing on the feet. I didn’t need to finish him off. I knew that damage had already been done. I’ve knocked so many guys out in my career before. I knew once I land a flush, it was a wrap. Herb Dean, you’ve got to thank the guy for saving that guy. Full credit to my opponent, thanks for taking this fight. This one was for my team City Kickboxing, my coaches and later on tonight we’ve got my teammate going up a weight class and going for another belt. I can’t wait for him to make history once again.

Sean Brady vs. Jake Matthews

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Sean Brady defeated Jake Matthews via submission (arm-triangle choke), Round 3 – 3:28

Sean Brady full post-fight interview

I think it was a really good performance. Looking back at welterweight, Jake has only lost one time and I just gave him that second loss. Before that, he’s fought really tough guys. He is a young guy, so I expect Jake to just get better and better from here, but I’m super happy with it. I took him down every round, controlled him every round and I got the late finish. I never got a finish in the third round. It’s something I always wanted to do and I got it. My conditioning felt good, my strength felt good to be able to finish that choke and I’m stoked. Jake is a very tough guy and for me to get a win like that, it’s a big deal.

Highlights:

Lívia Renata Souza vs. Amanda Lemos

OFFICIAL RESULTS: Amanda Lemos defeated Lívia Renata Souza via TKO, Round 1 – 3:39

Amanda Lemos post-fight interview

The fight was exactly what I trained for. I knew what was waiting for me and that she would go for her grappling. I was following her training and saw that she was training a lot of Muay Thai too. I imagined that she would want to trade with me a little bit on top, but that she would go back to her grappling, but I managed to impose my game all the time and it worked out. My strong spot is her weak spot. I remained in my strategy and came out with a win.

Uroš Medić vs. Aalon Cruz

Uros Medic full post-fight interview

We’ve seen a lot of crazy knockouts lately, people getting paid a bunch for knockouts of the year. They are stacking those bonuses so I’m very happy with the performance I had, I’m going to keep the momentum going, but I don’t think it was like the craziest debut. It’s a good way to kick off, good way to start the year. We had a very tough year behind us, so I’m very happy, I’m honestly very happy. My heart is full.

Mario Bautista vs. Trevin Jones

Trevin Jones murked Mario Bautista with second-round TKO

Full Trevin Jones post-fight interview

I know a lot of guys call to fight right away… If they call me to fight right away, I’ll fight right away. When I was 27 years old, 26 years old, I thought I wanted to be here and I had the perfect record to be here before I got some losses and I realized I was still at my party stage in my life. I still used to have fun and do things like that and as I look back on it, I’m like “no, Trevin, you were never ready to be here at that time”. Now I just turned 30 years old, I’m so focused, there is no better time for me to be here at 30 years old. I can cut out everything, I can stay focused, I don’t like doing those things no more. I’ll do it if there is a party, a birthday, a wedding, something like that, but it’s not something that I’m consistently involved in. Not like when I was younger, so there’s no better time for me to be here. Trevin Jones is here to stay.
