UFC 259: Aljamain Sterling, Petr Yan issue statements after controversial title fight
Jan Blachowicz becomes the first man to hand Israel Adesanya a loss in MMA.
The undefeated run of UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is over, as Jan Blachowicz bested him by unanimous decision to retain the UFC light heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 259.
Blachowicz also becomes the second UFC champion to successfully defend his title against a champion, following Henry Cejudo’s successful flyweight title defense against then-bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in January 2019.
No champ-champ at UFC 259: Jan Blachowicz retains the UFC light heavyweight title
The opening round was quiet, with both men getting in a couple of shots. While Blachowicz seemed to be a little more aggressive, he looked to be baffled by Adesanya’s movements and feinting.
Adesanya began to feel Blachowicz’s power throughout the second round. Blachowicz landed a hard combination early, and mid-way through the round he landed a small flurry in the clinch.
Blachowicz pressured and flurried Adesanya right away in the third, briefly locking up Adesanya’s back. Adesanya, however, got out of it and landed some of his own rocking shots, as the two traded for an even round.
Blachowicz caught Adesanya’s attention in the fourth round before scoring a double-leg takedown on the middleweight champ about a couple of minutes in and staying in top position for all of the round. Blachowicz got the fight to the ground in the fifth once again, and once again stayed in top position.
