Is Tom Brady Right About The New Jersey Number Rule? | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
Sounding like an old man on his porch, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady screamed at the NFL to “get the new jersey numbers off his lawn” after the league relaxed their position specific uniform numbering system. The change, according to Grandpa Brady, is “DUMB” and he says will lead to bad NFL football during the 2021 season. Since Brady is a creature of habit and does have a history of speaking out against the rules when they deflate his ability to perform, his words may be easy to dismiss, but could he be right? Is Tom Brady’s prediction of “Bad Football” in 2021 because of players wearing new uniform numbers correct? Or is he officially a grumpy old man?

It was a tough week for Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl winning quarterback after the NFL voted to grant access to more uniform numbers on Wednesday. The move was called “Dumb” by the Tampa Bay signal caller who posted on Instagram:
“Good luck trying to block the right people now! Going to make for a lot of bad football! Why not let the Lineman wear whatever they want too? Why have numbers? Just have colored jerseys…why not wear the same number?”
Brady’s “Bad Football” prediction is not completely unfounded. That’s because it’s easier for quarterbacks to look for jersey numbers on the field than for a player’s face. For a 21-year veteran like Brady, who knows all the jersey numbers he needs to know from every NFL team’s roster, having those players be able to change numbers this year probably does add an unknown element to the 2021 season. With so few players changing their numbers and Brady only concerned with the defensive players he is facing, the amount of time Brady will need to spend reading game programs during the 2021 season will be small, and he will be able to adapt.

It is sad, however, to see that Tom Brady has become that grumpy old man who wants to keep everything exactly the way it is until he retires, with even a small change like uniform numbers getting under his skin during the offseason. It is not as if the NFL won’t let other teams know who has changed their numbers before game day; and Brady half-heartedly saying that teams should wear the same number or no numbers at all is obviously a gross exaggeration of the facts.
Sorry Mr. Brady, but these young kids nowadays just want to wear the jersey number they have been wearing since they were in pee-wee football, and the NFL is now willing to let them do so. That means for the rest of your career, finding a player may take a little bit longer on a football field, so make sure you make your rocking chair comfortable and bring your reading glasses out onto the porch with you, because you will be doing a lot of yelling of new numbers during the 2021 NFL season.
