Good Idea Or Bad Idea: Delaying New NFL Head Coach Hiring | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
The conversation about how the NFL lacks diversity at head coach has continued into the current offseason as several minority assistant coaches were unable to secure head coaching jobs because they were working playoff games. One of those teams who went deep into the postseason, the Buffalo Bills, thought they were losing one of their assistant coaches, yet didn’t as teams looking for a new head coach didn’t wait around for them to be eliminated. As a result, there has been a new rule proposed to give more coaches a chance to move up the ranks by making teams wait until later in the offseason before signing coaches.
The NFL allows team with playoff bye weeks to grant their assistant coaches the opportunity to interview for head coaching job, with those who are still playing postseason games required to wait until their team is knocked out of the playoffs. With the expanded postseason field last year and only one team in each conference earning a bye week, the ability of assistants like Kansas City’s Eric Bieniemy and Buffalo’s Brian Daboll to find head coaching jobs were made more difficult; as a result, neither were able to find new jobs for 2021, something their current teams feel bitter-sweet about.
For Bieniemy, the current rules have hurt him for two straight years as the Kansas City Chiefs have reached the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons, thus shutting out the highly thought of offensive coordinator from the head coaching interview sweepstakes.
One of the reasons why assistant coaches need time while interviewing for head coaching jobs is to know who they will be able to hire for their own coaching staffs. This is also the reason why teams are often in a hurry to hire their primary or secondary head coaching target, since they need to know who will be on their staff and ensure they will have a job for the following season.
Since NFL teams rarely promote an assistant mid-season and keep them into the new year, creating a rule that the Buffalo Bills are advocating won’t speed up who will or won’t be fired during the year, and the new rule will, in theory, make it more fair for every potential head coach to interview each year.
Will this new rule make it easier for minority coaches to move up the ladder and become head coaches? Clearly it can’t hurt their chances since the only way to get new jobs is to be granted the chance to interview for them with their success no longer in the way of obtaining that interview. And as the number of interviews increase, so too should the number of minority head coaches, something the NFL needs to show is possible as so many failed white coaches continued to be recycled over those who have earned a chance to succeed at their profession’s highest level.
If nothing else, this rule will take away one more excuse NFL teams have for not interviewing those coaching candidates who are the best at what they do and find out if they are ready to take that next step, something that NFL owners clearly need in order to break the color barrier that exists in their own minds as well as across the entire league, now and forever.
