The act is the fourth act to snag a first Alternative Airplay No. 1 in 2021, following Machine Gun Kelly (“My Ex’s Best Friend,” with Blackbear), Cannons (“Fire for You”) and I Dont Know How But They Found Me (“Leave Me Alone”). Additionally, Blackbear’s ruler alongside MGK marked his first as a lead act, after he spent 20 weeks at No. 1 as featured on All Time Low’s “Monsters” beginning last September.
Concurrently, “Heat Waves” sizzles 7-5 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 4.2 million audience impressions, up 19%, according to MRC Data. Although most of its rock airplay is from alternative radio stations, the track has also spent a week on the Adult Alternative Airplay list (No. 39, Feb. 27).
“Heat Waves” has also become Glass Animals’ first crossover hit, boasting highs of Nos. 26 and 38 thus far on Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay, respectively. It’s the band’s first entry on the multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, reaching a new No. 57 best on the latest ranking, with its radio success assisted by 8 million U.S. streams and 2,000 downloads sold in the latest tracking week.
The song is one of three singles from Glass Animals’ third studio album, Dreamland. Their first top 10 on the Billboard 200 (No. 7, last August), the LP has earned 313,000 equivalent album units to date.
