Fernando Tatis Jr. Will Win More Than This Former MVP | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
As the San Diego Padres hand out another nine-figure contract, the team may still be the second best in Southern California, at least for a while as the LA Dodgers take their World Series victory lap this season. They will, however, be almost assured of having one of the game’s brightest stars, Fernando Tatis, Jr. on their roster. They are also virtually assured they will have a winning team in the years to come, and likely a championship banner to fly, unlike Mike Trout, who makes more money, but won’t win as much as Fernando Tatis will.
It is truly tragic that Mike Trout will spend is career with a second-rate organization like the Angels, collecting MVP trophies and never spending time playing postseason games, let alone playing in a World Series. For the Padres, however, as their talent pool grows and is locked up for many years under contract, Southern California may soon be theirs as the Dodgers window closes and the Angels can’t figure out how to open theirs.
Just like Giancarlo Stanton, Mike Trout looks great on the stat sheet, yet both players, each of whom have a contract worth over $300 Million (Trout is the most valuable at $426.5 Million), look great from April to September, and then get to go home while Major League Baseball’s true stars take to the diamond in the playoffs.
Players like Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Manny Machado are lucky enough to be with a franchise that cares about winning again and not just building a team that relies on one player in a sport that requires a dozen or more core players to have a sustained period of success and title contention.
Now that they are the only game in town, I have little doubt that the San Diego Padres will deliver to their city a long-awaited World Series title in the coming years, while the Dodgers make the National League West must-watch TV and the Angeles continue to be also rans during the rest of Mike Trout’s sabermetrics career.
Sure, it is easy to root for Trout as a player, he gives full effort and provides fantasy points and highlight plays on a regular basis … but Tatis takes the entertainment of sports to a higher level.
Yes, he flips his bat more than most would want, he steals bases when most don’t think he should and, oh my, he swings at 3-0 pitches. He is also a player who wants to win and it’s that passion that will help the San Diego Padres always to strive for wins when those players in Angels uniforms won’t, and why Fernando Tatis, when it is all said and done, will have something Mike Trout will never have, a World Series ring … something those who love stats have yet to figure out how to add to their spreadsheets, and never will.
I promise you San Diego has a championship in their future, with Fernando Tatis leading the way.
