Diego Sanchez says he DM’d Kevin Lee when he was cut from the UFC

Diego Sanchez says he DM’d Kevin Lee when he was cut from the UFC.

Former The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner Diego Sanchez empathized with Kevin Lee when the 29-year-old former interim title challenger was let go from the UFC last year.

Just a few months later, they’ll go to battle in the Eagle FC 46 main event on March 11.

Sanchez was supposed to face Donald Cerrone in early 2021 before the bout fell through. A tense relationship between his then-manager Joshua Fabia and the UFC brass led to the two sides parting ways.

After Sanchez’s cut from the UFC, he opted to sign with EFC despite an alleged lucrative offer to fight in Bare Knuckle FC. He’s intent on finishing his MMA career on his terms.

Sanchez fought many top UFC fighters during his time with the promotion, and his journey in MMA is well-documented. He has been through the ups and downs that come with competing on the professional level.

During an exclusive interview with FanSided’s Amy Kaplan, Sanchez revealed that he reached out to Lee shortly after the UFC let him go.

“We’re all about honor,” Sanchez said. “When Kevin Lee got cut from the UFC and was going through some hard times, I sent him a DM. I said ‘hey bro, if you need an older guy that’s a big brother that’s been through it, that wants to talk to you, I’m here for you if you need me.’ We’re already on that [respect] level. We didn’t know we were gonna fight, but now we come into the battle and it’s all respect, and may the best man win.”

Diego Sanchez and Kevin Lee will square off in the Eagle FC 46 main event

Sanchez won three of his last five fights in the UFC over the likes of Mickey Gall and Craig White. Early on in his career, he earned wins over the likes of Kenny Florian, Nick Diaz, and Clay Guida.

Lee is looking to get back on track in his MMA career after losses in four of his last five. After fighting for the UFC interim lightweight title against Tony Ferguson, he hasn’t been able to recapture the magic from earlier in his UFC tenure.

Sanchez and Lee seem cordial with one another ahead of their matchup, but it’s arguably a must-win situation for both fighters heading into EFC 46.
