David Montgomery leaves Week 4 after suffering gruesome knee injury

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery left Week 4 after suffering a nasty knee injury in the middle of one of his best games.

The Chicago Bears were dealt a brutal blow in the middle of an otherwise fantastic Week 4 game against the Detroit Lions.

Justin Fields bounced back from his rough debut against Cleveland to lead the Bears up and down the Solider Field while dicing up Detroit’s defense. As the Lions began to claw their way back into the game in the second half, the Bears lost perhaps the most important part of its offense on Sunday.

David Montgomery took an awkward hit in the fourth quarter and immediately went to the ground writhing in pain. He ripped his helmet off and teammates immediately went to a knee with concern.

The injury was so bad that Fox refused to show the replay after he was helped off the field.

Up to that point in the game, Montgomery had been having an incredible day. He was a focal point of the Bears offensive attack, racking up over 100 yards on the ground and collecting two touchdowns while bruising the Lions defense.

Matt Nagy’s offense has leaned heavily on Montgomery so far this season, efficiently using him in key spots to try and get the offense flowing. With Justin Fields taking over the reigns under center, Montgomery’s value to the game plan only increased, so losing him for any period of time will be a brutal blow to a Bears offense that finally looked like it was starting to get its act together.
