Conor McGregor not fit for return, will see what next for 155

Dana White himself is unsure what will happen next regarding both the lightweight title picture and Conor McGregor following the events of UFC 274

With UFC 274 now in the history books, we’re left with a few questions: Who will face Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight title? Will Conor McGregor accept one of the two callouts that came in his direction? Where does Michael Chandler fit into all this?

If you’re wondering any of these things, dear reader, some bad news for you: UFC President Dana White and company don’t have those answers immediately.

White almost always hates to make plans in the immediate aftermath of an event. And he, as several UFC commentators and MMA media, points out that are several different combinations you could pick from in terms of what’s next for the UFC’s lightweight picture.

Dana White: Conor McGregor isn’t ready to return, we’ll see what’s next for Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler

White told the media that as of this moment, he still wishes to re-book Islam Makhachev vs. Beneil Dariush, a bout originally scheduled for February that Dariush was forced to withdraw from due to a leg injury.

But he later stated that after tonight, he also could see Makhachev slipping into the opposition role of Oliveira’s opponent in the future vacant title fight.

“I do [still want to make Makhachev vs. Dariush]. Joe Rogan just grabbed me in the hallway and told me not to,” White said at the post-fight press conference.

“I don’t know [if Chandler vs. Dariush is next if Makhachev faces Oliveira]. When I get up here after a fight like tonight, I’m not even thinking about that stuff. Tuesday, we’ll get back into the war room, put some s*** on the board that might happen, we’ll put some s*** on the board that will happen. I don’t know tonight. I’ll be honest with you. Who doesn’t think Dariush and Islam is a great fight? It’s a killer fight. I would like to see that fight to see who the No. 1 contender is.

“But I’m not going to lie. I wouldn’t mind doing Islam vs. Oliveira either. We’ll see what happens.”

Oliveira and Chandler both have another thing in common regarding UFC 274, as they each called out McGregor in their post-fight interviews. Chandler says he’d want McGregor if not slotted to fight Oliveira for the vacant strap, while Oliveira asked McGregor if he’d fight or run from him.

McGregor later responded to both men — with Chandler seemingly getting the more assured answer due to a willingness to have the fight at 170 instead of 155.

But White says to put the hold on all the McGregor talk. The UFC president claims McGregor still isn’t ready to return following the injury he suffered against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 this past July.

“[Chandler vs. McGregor is] a fun one, man,” White said. “Who the hell wouldn’t want to see that fight? But Conor’s not ready yet. When Conor’s 100 percent and can actually really start training for a fight, then we talk about what’s next for Conor.

“He’s the biggest superstar in the sport. So everybody’s going to call him out. For the last how many months, you guys want to talk to me about Conor. I would have never said Chandler in a million years. And then tonight happened the way that it happened, and Chandler says ‘Hey, Conor, let’s fight.’” And Conor’s like ‘You know, I would like to fight you.’ So by the time Conor is actually ready to compete, who knows what’s going to happen? Who knows what the landscape is going to be? But I promise you, we’ll make a good one.”
