Canelo Alvarez multi-fight Matchroom and DAZN deal official

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez has a new dancing partner set in a multi-fight deal with Matchroom and DAZN.

Undisputed super middleweight champion has two fights set as the biggest draw in boxing is ready to embark on his 2022 journey.

In the late afternoon on Friday, Feb. 25, Matchroom and DAZN sent out a press release stating that Alvarez will fight WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas, NV, on Saturday, May 7, which is Cinco de Mayo weekend. He will return after that fight in September.

Alvarez (57-1-2, 37 KOs) went scorched earth between 2020 and 2021. He fought four times, registering three knockouts posting nothing but victories. He stopped Caleb Plant in November to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Alvarez moves up to light heavyweight. He beat Sergey Kovalev in 2019 to win the WBO light heavyweight title but relinquished it to pursue super middleweight.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol is set for May 7 on DAZN pay-per-view

Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) won the interim WBA light heavyweight title in 2016 but captured the full title in 2017 after knocking out Trent Broadhurst in round 1. The 31-year-old from Russia isn’t the biggest puncher but may be the most well-rounded boxer Alvarez has fought since Gennadiy Golovkin.

No venue has been announced for Alvarez vs. Bivol, but the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena tend to host the most prominent boxing bouts in Vegas. Alvarez is from Guadalajara, Mexico, which should make for a sell-out Cinco de Mayo event.

DAZN is a subscription service, but Alvarez vs. Bivol will be its first pay-per-view specialty. DAZN members will have to pay $59.99 for the fight, and non-DAZN members will pay $79.99, including a month’s DAZN membership.

The press release stated that Alvarez is also signed for a September contest. If he loses to Bivol, the rematch would likely fill that vacancy. If Alvarez wins in May, a trilogy bout with Golovkin makes the most sense. Golovkin is also a Matchroom fighter, but the two dislike each other. It will be interesting to see how things play out for Alvarez over the next seven months.
