Rock legend Bruce Springsteen was charged with driving while intoxicated after a law enforcement officer saw him take a shot of tequila and get on his motorcycle, according to court documents released Thursday.
According to a statement of probable cause, the arresting officer was on foot patrol in the Sandy Hook, N.J., section of the Gateway National Recreation Area on Nov. 14 when the officer saw Mr. Springsteen take the shot and start his motorcycle’s engine. The officer told Mr. Springsteen that alcohol consumption was prohibited at Sandy Hook, an area that includes a lighthouse and beaches.
Mr. Springsteen starred in a two-minute commercial for Jeep that aired during the Super Bowl last weekend. Stellantis NV pulled the commercial from YouTube after it was reported that he was arrested late last year.
Mr. Springsteen told the officer that he was planning to drive out of the park and said that he had two shots of tequila in 20 minutes, according to the statement, which also said that the 750 milliliter bottle of Patrón tequila was completely empty.
“Springsteen smelt strongly of alcohol coming off his person and had glassy eyes,” the statement said. “Springsteen was visibly swaying back and forth while I observed his eyes.”
