Cover your ears fight fans, because there is some news from the Middle East that may bring you back to the days of your youth. That’s because according to The Sun, there are talks of a mega deal being worked on between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield that could create one of the largest paydays for two fighters in boxing history. So, would you watch a Tyson vs Holyfield 3 fight despite each man being over fifty years old?
People were still willing to watch Mike Tyson, 54, box and defeat Roy Jones, Jr. late last year. Proving that the one-time “Baddest Man on the Planet” still has some box office appeal. Also, according to The Sun, there are people willing to lay out some $275 Million to get both Tyson and Evander Holyfield back into the ring, despite Holyfield being 58.
These investors are in Saudi Arabia and have seen a lot of success come from sponsoring the UFC’s “Fight Island,” and are looking to add to their collection of high-profile sporting events. While Tyson has had some ups and down since his fighting career ended, both he and Holyfield may be listening to these offers for one simple reason, money. Each, if reports have been true over the years, have spent the hundreds of millions of dollars they each made during their pro boxing careers.
Honestly, seeing this news article made me cringe at the thought of having two men risking their health at this stage in their lives just for money. I guess, however, when you don’t have anything left, and are fearful of your future, you fall back upon what you know best, even if you are decades past your prime. I was not surprised that the Tyson/Jones event did so well since Iron Mike looked good in his training videos, and hyped the event very well on social and mainstream media. However, I truly think Tyson could seriously injury Holyfield, who did not look as impressive in videos last year and may not be able to defend himself from one, let alone a barrage of Tyson’s punches.
Sadly, when people think there’s money to be made, they will try anything, especially when all they are risking is the extra money they have to lose, and are not taking the physical risk a boxer would. I would not be shocked to see this event happen in 2021 while Tyson’s popularity is high again, and Holyfield hoping to just make some money for his later years. I wish it wouldn’t take place, but so often when the powers that be throw enough money on the table, things happen.
Will you watch Tyson/Holyfield III? I won’t because I don’t want to see someone get seriously hurt or have something happen that day that will adversely affect them for the rest of their lives, which is what at least one of these fighters would be doing if/when this event takes place.
