Bruce Arians is riding high this offseason as the head coach of the Super Bowl LV winners. The 68-year-old head coach also fulfilled a promise he made when he said if his team won the NFL title, he would get a tattoo. Arians is a coach ahead of his time on the field, but when it comes to ink, I think the NFL should follow his lead and implement a new rule that Super Bowl head coaches get a tattoo regardless if they win or lose the big game.

Let’s think back, shall we, on all the great head coaches to coach in a Super Bowl: Lombardi, Stram, Shula, Landry, Madden, Noll, Walsh, Gibbs, Parcells, Belichick. All of them helped their team perform at the highest level when the spotlight was the brightest and the football stage the biggest.
Don’t you think some of them should have inked up after winning their ring?
I’m sure some of the Raiders players could have helped John Madden find a tattoo parlor in Oakland, and getting guys like Vince Lombardi, Hank Stram or Don Shula to a tattoo parlor would have upped their creditability with their players, even back in the 1960’s or 1970’s.
However, getting a tattoo when you are a Super Bowl Champion is easy, too easy, in fact. So, in order to raise the stakes a little bit, the NFL should require that head coaches and the quarterback of the losing team get tattoos as well.
Don’t you think that Pete Carroll would have handed the ball off to Marshawn Lynch in Super Bowl XLIX if he knew there was a tattoo on the line. Carroll would be allowed to put the tattoo on his butt since he pulled that bad play out of his ass.
Or how about Dan Quinn, the former Atlanta Falcons head coach: shouldn’t he walk around with the “28-3” tattoo for the rest of his life since, after all, he is reminded about Super Bowl LI everyday anyway? And as much as I respect Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills for what he has dealt with off the field in his fights against cancer, it really would be fun to see him have a tattoo sleeve of for his four Super Bowl losses right along with his Hall of Fame head coach Marv Levy.
Forget those lame “bets” mayors make when their local team wins the conference title, if you want some real excitement, we need to see Andy Reid get two tattoos, one for his Super Bowl win, and another for his loss over the last two seasons. Right behind him will be Bill Belichick to get his six Super Bowl winning tattoos, and the next day his three larger AFC Championship (a.k.a. Super Bowl losing) tattoos. Of course, Belichick’s ink will be easy, that’s because for the six wins, the tattoos will be a man standing behind a video camera, and the three losses would be the same man, only the lens cap would be on.
The time has come for the NFL to mandate head coaches and quarterbacks wear their greatest games on their sleeves, or anywhere else they want as long as we have proof the tattoo has been obtained. Because rings are easy to wear or hide, but unlike that runner’s up conference title ring Super Bowl losers get, you can’t always hide a tattoo, and getting them will almost be as painful as the loss itself, but much more fun for the fans of the winning team, don’t you think?
