A Mike Krzyzewski Farewell Tour Is A Terrible Idea | Sports Takes & News | TooAthletic.com
College Basketball saw the announcement of a farewell tour this week when Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski said the upcoming season would be his last with the program. This came only months have “Coach K” had several awkward moments during the pandemic, including cancelling games many felt like he was avoiding, and his interaction with a student-reporter at a press conference. Now, in what is being dubbed “The Last Ride,” a season-long farewell tour around the ACC and college basketball is now set to begin this fall for Krzyzewski.
In true Coach K style, and as several college coaches have been permitted to do, Duke has already announced a replacement for the 2022-23 season, as former Blue Devils player and current associate head coach Jon Scheyer will take over the program. If this move doesn’t strike you as one being made by someone being pushed out the door and trying to make it appear as if they are leaving on their own, then you just don’t understand how sports works nowadays.
Last year, the Duke Blue Devils missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995, and the 74-year-old head coach had several “senior moments” along the way. Yes, Coach K put Duke on the college basketball map, but there is a point where people hold on too long to their power, and this “Last Ride” tour will be Krzyzewski’s chance to receive all the accolades he deserves for what he has done for college basketball. Sadly, and selfishly, it will need to be at the expense of the same program he built and the players he recruited.
Thanks to Mike Krzyzewski, instead of (hopefully) having a return to normal college basketball this year, we will be overrun with highlight after highlight of him receiving gifts from all the ACC schools he has dominated for the better part of four decades. That, while fellow coaches will be asked to take attention away from their own program to discuss what Coach K meant to them over the years, without anyone being allowed to tell one bad story or share one bad interaction with him. That’s because having a retirement tour is like dying, except you get to hear the eulogy.
I guess this was bound to happen since Duke wasn’t bold enough to make the difficult change they needed to at head coach without giving their savior one last chance to coach a team, and the self-centered coach wasn’t able to just walk away without taking that “Last Ride” on the company dime. I can only imagine the cheesy gifts he will receive from some of his rivals once the new season begins. I just hope that some of them have the guts to stick it to a coach who has stuck it to them over the last forty years. I also hope Jim Boeheim at Syracuse is taking notes, because as the only head coach with more tenure at his job than Coach K has, you know there is at least one more farewell tour forthcoming.
I just wish people would just retire; because what Coach K is doing is being done for all the wrong reasons; he is doing it for his own reasons, which is never the best way to be pushed out the door, nor is it the right way for a school to handle a coach they are admitting needs to leave.
