Caleb Williams ended the wait for Oklahoma fans by entering the transfer portal but where could the dynamic quarterback now end up?
In the midst of the Lincoln Riley departure, Brent Venables’ arrival and the madness surrounding Oklahoma football as a result, the big question centered upon quarterback Caleb Williams. Namely, it remained a mystery whether or not he would stay in Norman or explore his other options in college football by way of the transfer portal.
Though Sooners fans certainly had to hope that Williams playing in the Alamo Bowl was a positive sign for them, the bad news came on Monday as the quarterback announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal.
Now comes the craziness about what Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class, will do next. But if we’re looking situationally and at the teams that recruited him, then we have to think that these five transfer destinations would make a lot of sense for the quarterback.
Caleb Williams transfer destinations: 5 ideal landing spots for QB
5. Oklahoma Sooners
We’re getting this out of the way because, frankly, it’s obvious.
In his announcement that he was entering the transfer portal, Williams quite clearly left the door open to return to the Sooners and remain their starting quarterback under a new coaching staff.
Now, are those empty words to try and save some face with the fans in Norman, or is that something that’s actually on the table? It’s impossible to clarify that at this particular point in time, but it would make some sense.
For starters, Venables brought on former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby to work on his staff in the same role. Lebby is familiar with Williams in that, when he was with the Rebels, he was the primary recruiter trying to get the quarterback to come to Oxford. As such, there is a pre-existing relationship there that could be valuable for Oklahoma.
Throw in the fact that Lebby has helped quarterbacks produce at a high clip in his system — few with the raw talent of Williams, too — and that could make staying more attractive. Subsequently, though it might seem like a Sooner fever dream, staying put can’t be taken off the table.
