The Steelers should consider moving these three players at some point during the offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a weird spot this offseason. Ben Roethlisberger is expected to return, and that means a salary cap nightmare for the team.
His money is going to be moved around to make it work, and several key free agents will likely have to be let go. Getting Roethlisberger, JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner back would be a tall task.
Trading established players for draft picks is a way to ease the financial burden. Let’s take a look at three trade ideas the Steelers should at least consider this offseason.
3 trade ideas for the Steelers to consider
3. Trade Joe Haden
Joe Haden has been with the Steelers since 2017 and made the Pro Bowl in 2019. He has one year remaining on his deal and is set to earn $7 million in 2021, but comes in as a $15.57 million cap hit. The team can save $12.6 million by trading him.
Haden is 31 years old and has proven to be a suitable defensive back with the Steelers. But saving over $12 million has to be considered, and it should not be too difficult to find a team who would take on someone like Haden for one season.
The goal should be to go all-in during what should be Roethlisberger’s last season in town. An aging defensive back with such a high cap hit does not help the cause given the team’s budget situation.
