3 players the Chiefs should sign to protect Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs need to rebuild their offensive line to protect Patrick Mahomes this offseason. Here are three signings Kansas City should make.

Credit Kansas City’s front office for understanding that their inability to protect Patrick Mahomes was a big reason why they failed to capture a Super Bowl title last season. Now the Chiefs are prepared to dramatically overhaul their offensive line in an effort to solve that weakness heading into 2021.

The team’s decision to release both Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz on Thursday now means the Chiefs could start next season with five new starting offensive lineman. Each of the team’s three projected interior starters are headed for free agency as well. Odds are one or two of those players will return to the fold in Kansas City next year, but the team can shop for upgrades at every position as a result of all the uncertainty.

It’s time for the Chiefs to spend big on protecting their most valuable commodity. Landing any of these three offensive linemen in free agency would be huge for Kansas City’s future title hopes.

3. Corey Linsley

Keeping pressure away from Mahomes up the middle is a big key for Andy Reid’s aerial attack. The Packers are poised to let their All-Pro center leave because of his asking price. The Chiefs would score a major victory if they can find a way to fit Linsley into next year’s roster.

He may not be the best center in football, but he comfortably profiles as a top-5 player at his position. Linsley could effectively serve as the quarterback of the team’s offensive line for years to come. Look for Kansas City to approach him the minute free agency begins.
