Candace Parker and Kahleah Copper of the Chicago Sky celebrate after defeating the Phoenix Mercury in Game Four of the WNBA Finals to win the championship at Wintrust Arena on October 17, 2021, in Chicago, Illinois.

WNBA legend Candace Parker, a Chicago native, returned home this season after spending the majority of her career in Los Angeles. Her teammate Kahleah Copper, seen with her, was named Finals MVP and Parker made sure to tell anyone and everyone how proud she was of her teammate. This was an incredible Finals, and it was thrilling to see the excitement and pure emotion release during this moment.

Candace Parker of the Chicago Sky hugs Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury after Game 4 of the WNBA Finals at Wintrust Arena on October 17, 2021, in Chicago, Illinois. The Chicago Sky defeated the Phoenix Mercury 80-74 to win the championship.

Candace Parker and Diana Taurasi are two of the biggest names in WNBA history so seeing them play on the same court was an incredible honor. As the game ended, the court was suddenly full of players, media, friends, family and coaches, so I lost sight of Taurasi but was able to stay with Parker. At one point, the crowd circled around Parker, and I wasn’t sure what was happening. I raised my camera and aimed to the center — it wasn’t until after that I realized I had gotten both of them together, two legendary players hugging in the middle of the championship celebration. Easily one of my favorite moments as a photographer!

Evan Fournier of the New York Knicks reacts after making a 3-point basket during the second overtime against the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden on October 20, 2021, in New York City. The Knicks won 138-134.

It was the New York Knicks’ first home game this season, and they were building on the success of last year. There were a couple of players that were really playing well this night. I kept trying to make nice photos of those players throughout the game, but the tension between the two teams — the Knicks and the Bostin Celtics — just kept building. The pictures were getting better and better, as it went to overtime, and then a second overtime. This picture of Evan Fournier came during the second overtime after Fournier made yet another 3-pointer. He had been on fire that night. Fournier’s great game and the electricity of the crowd came together to make this great, raw emotional moment.
