Aari McDonald and head coach Adia Barnes of the Arizona Wildcats are showered with confetti after the win over the Indiana Hoosiers during the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Alamodome on March 29, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. The Arizona Wildcats defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 66-53 to advance to the Final Four.

Due to COVID restrictions, the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament has been played in a bubble in San Antonio. Instead of the normal stage and confetti canons that are traditionally at this event, a cooler was filled with confetti for teams to use as they wished. As guard Aari McDonald and head coach Adia Barnes of the Arizona Wildcats were being interviewed after their win over the Indiana Hoosiers, Wildcat teammates dumped the bucket of confetti on them. This image is from just before the moment of impact. I saw the team moving in on the pair and positioned myself to where I could see the reaction on their faces as they were showered. I really liked this moment because you can see they are both realizing what is coming their way before being buried in confetti. This season has been a historic run for the Wildcats and this picture helps tell that story as they make their first Final Four appearance ever.

Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers hits a first-inning two-run home run off of a pitch from Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians during Opening Day at Comerica Park on April 1, 2021, in Detroit, Michigan.

With fans being allowed into Comerica Park in Detroit on Opening Day, photographers were told that we could photograph from anywhere as long as we didn’t get in the way of fans and were properly socially distanced. Under normal circumstances, we are never allowed to go behind home plate to photograph so I thought I would give this angle a try. As the first inning started, the snow went from light to heavy quickly. I was playing with the angle when Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers came to the plate. The snow was getting harder as the pitch count went up. In this moment, Cabrera took this pitch to right field for a first-inning two-run home run. The snow stopped soon after the first inning and the Tigers went on to win 3-2 against the Cleveland Indians.

Bubba Wallace, driver of the No. 23 DoorDash Toyota, drives during practice for the NASCAR Cup Series Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 26, 2021, in Bristol, Tennessee.

I was very excited to be covering the first NASCAR Cup Series race on dirt since 1970. Luckily, I had great cover for myself and my gear to shoot trackside for the weekend. With dry conditions and four practices that afternoon, the constant track time caused a tremendous dust bowl within Bristol Motor Speedway. I would imagine it was equivalent to being in a constant sandstorm, but you just had to kind of stand there and embrace it. The mixture of the dust and warm sun made for a unique setting that hasn’t been seen in the series for 51 years. Capturing images like this and being able to document a little bit of history at the same time was worth all of the post cleanup.
